Best Practices of HVAC Duct Installation

The state of your HVAC ducts that deliver heated and cooled air heavily impacts the system’s performance, energy efficiency and comfort. As such, it can only perform as well as it was installed. In this post, the leading air conditioner repair expert, Cooper Brothers, Inc, shares the best practices of HVAC duct installation

Proper placement. As much as possible, HVAC ducts should be positioned inside the home’s conditioned envelope (the ceilings, floors and walls) to avoid exposure to the elements that will affect its performance. If your contractor needs to install the ducts outside the envelope in a basement, attic or garage, they should be protected by R-8 insulation to mitigate energy loss.

Using high-quality materials. In the past, it was standard practice to use wall cavities and ceiling joist channels to create makeshift ducts. Channeling air through these passageways is not only inefficient but will also allow pollutants and contaminants to find their way into your living space. Nowadays, reputable air conditioner replacement companies use ducts made of sheet metal, fiberglass or other flexible quality duct materials.

Ensuring balanced airflow. Balanced air pressure needs to be maintained in your home to enable your HVAC unit to operate properly and efficiently. To achieve this balance, the proper number of supply and return registers must be placed strategically to deliver and return the same amount of air in each designated room in your home.

Proper sizing and layout. To create an efficient ductwork layout, your HVAC contractor should determine your home’s heating and cooling load per room using Manual J, provided by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. Afterwards, the equipment is handpicked using Manual S, and the duct size and layout are designed in accordance with Manual D.
