For instance, an air conditioner that’s too small will consume too much energy while still failing to cool the home properly. An oversized air conditioning system, on the other hand, will constantly short cycle. Electric bills also tend to be high in both cases. Sizing Your Air Conditioner


The cooling capacity of your air conditioning system is measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units. To figure out what size air conditioner is right for your home, you’ll first need to calculate the size of the spaces that will be served by the air conditioner. Multiply the length times the width of the room or area to be cooled to calculate the size of the area in square feet.


Next, you’ll need to multiply that total by 25 BTU. For example, if a room is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide, then it has an area of 180 square feet. Multiply 180 by 25, and you’ll get 4500. This means that you need to get an air conditioner that has a minimum of 4500 BTU in cooling capacity. Don’t buy an air conditioner that has a cooling capacity that’s too large for the size of the room.
