If the unit fails to defrost, the controls or sensors may be faulty, which will require attention from a technician. Icing can develop when air flow is blocked, as well. However, if the temperature in the winter is warmer than mid-30s and the heat pump is still running all the time, there might be a refrigerant leak or an issue with the compressor.
