When Should You Turn Off Your Humidifier?

Using a humidifier during cold weather has a lot of benefits. But you might be wondering: when is the right time to turn it off?

When to Turn It Off

Your home’s humidifier may have helped you get through winter just fine, keeping your household warm and comfortable while saving you money by reducing energy costs. It probably also saved your wood furniture and floor from the effects of drying. It’s earned a rest, so you’ll want to switch it off now that the cold weather is over.

You must turn off your humidifier at the end of the heating season, as a humidifier is simply unnecessary during the warm months. Keeping it on will just cost you more money. Warm weather will make your air conditioner work harder and longer to remove the excess moisture. Your air conditioner will not be able to cool and dehumidify your home properly, and ultimately this will increase the energy costs for operating your cooling system. It’s best to look for a local AC repair professional for consultation and maintenance.

How to Turn It Off

  • Step 1- Turn it to the off position or the lowest percent of humidity.

  • Step 2- If your humidifier has duct dampers, close the bypass duct damper or turn it to the summer position.

  • Step 3- Turn off the water supply to the humidifier. Follow the quarter-inch water line from the humidifier. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops.

  • Step 4- Don’t forget to clean the humidifier. Replace the water panel and leave it to dry until winter.
