The Importance of HVAC Duct Sizing

When professionals install a central HVAC unit for the first time, one of the most important things they spend time on is sizing the ducts that will deliver the cooled or heated air to the rooms in your house or commercial space.

Not all ducts are sized the same. Problems can occur if the size of your ducts isn’t suited for your space. Here are some of the most common issues with incorrectly sized ducts:

When the Ducts Are Too Big

Properly sized ducts enable your HVAC system to distribute air as evenly and efficiently as possible. While oversized ducts are certainly better for improving airflow, they won’t do any good if your system isn’t powerful enough. HVAC systems need specific air pressure in the ducts to do their job well. If the ducts are too big for your HVAC system, you’ll probably need a home furnace repair or even a replacement in the near future.

When the Ducts Are Too Small

If the ducts are too small, on the other hand, there might be so much pressure that it backs up into the HVAC system, causing resistance. The blower fan will have a more difficult time distributing air as well, which will reduce the efficiency of your system. This stresses out the components of the system, which can also lead to an air conditioner repair or replacement sometime soon.

Factors That Affect Sizing

There are several factors that professionals take into account when they measure to determine the size of the ducts you need for your HVAC system. Some of these factors include the following:

  • The size of the rooms and their individual heating and cooling needs

  • Insulation

  • Noise

  • Sealing

  • Areas where the ductwork design has to be retrofitted

It’s not advisable to attempt DIY ductwork installation. These factors have to be considered carefully, and professionals are the best people for the job.
