How Carrier® Became a Trusted Name in the Industry

Choosing an HVAC brand can be tricky. While homeowners often take into account a company’s customer service and product reviews before making a purchase, there’s another important factor that shouldn’t be forgotten—the company’s history. With a rich history comes expertise.

The history of Carrier® stretches back to the start of the 20th century. The air conditioner repair experts at Cooper Brothers Inc. give a quick recap of how Willis Carrier founded the company and invented modern air conditioning below.

How It All Started

Finding comfort back then was hard, with hot, steamy weather often keeping people awake at night. But that all started to change with one observation: Carrier realized he could control moisture levels in the air by passing it through water to create fog. Humidity control is an essential function of any air conditioning system.

Carrier got the idea while working for Buffalo Forge Company in 1902. In the same year, he invented the world’s first scientific air conditioning system. Thirteen years later, Carrier left the company to establish the Carrier Engineering Corporation.

The Spread of Air Conditioning Systems

The first air conditioning system was installed at a printing plant in 1902. The first commercial installation was in a movie theatre in Detroit in 1924. Five years later, air conditioning systems gained national recognition. In 1929, the Carrier Corporation installed air conditioning systems in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Eventually, air conditioning systems would spread to households as well.

The Carrier Corporation Today

Throughout its history, Carrier has made a series of acquisitions and was itself acquired by United Technologies Corporation. For almost a century, the company has navigated economic headwinds and market disruptions to cement its position as a leading manufacturer. To maintain this position, Carrier has produced over 50 brands and continues to make innovations, particularly in energy-efficient features, through joint ventures with other companies.

Carrier products are known for their quality and cutting-edge features, which you won’t be able to enjoy if they’re not properly installed. That’s why, whether it’s an AC repair or installation work, you should only hire experienced contractors.
